MMmmkay?
You want to know why there's a drug problem?
It's more than just escapism I think.
Have you ever noticed that you never laugh as hard sober as you do when you're stoned?
That you never cry as hard as you do when you're drunk?
I've heard junky's say that the never felt as relaxed, coke heads say that they've never been as alive (no personal experience on those two, pot and alcohol have been more than enough over the years... more alcohol than anything... But then, if you've read any of my shit you've probably already figured that out)
I don't think it's just about escapism.
Not saying that escapism isn't a big part of it, just saying that it's not the only thing.
I think that in our desensitized,
disenfranchised
dehumanized
isolated
concentrated
segmented
fragmented
misrepresented
and often resented society...
Well, we tend to repress those things.
It's more for survival than for anything I think. We all know instinctively what happens to the people who are too open with their feelings, or are too emotionally aware.
But, we make special accommodation for those who are impaired.
She didn't mean it, she was drunk.
He's not always like that, he was just a little high and he gets like that.
He's not that sleazy, he just needs help.
She's not that damaged, she just needs some understanding.
(And don't get me started on the psycho-pharmaceutical trend of the last few years)
And I'm not going to debate the right or wrong of it.
I'm not going to deny that in many cases it's necessary.
I'm just going to ask a question I think we should have been asking for a long time.
Why have we created a society where otherwise healthy people need a foreign substance in order to feel anything approximating a human reaction?
connection?
attachment?
Why do we do this?
