Rants and Poetry of a Tired and Angry Man.

Just what the title says, don't look for anything too profound or earthshaking.

Still Life with 1968 Dodge Dart and Too Many Words.

Standing silently I saw it,
crossing the parking lot at Wal Mart,
an efflorescent study in grey, russet, green, and burgundy.

A pegasian chariot fleeing pell-mell between the parked vehicles,
paying little heed to the stoic wire mesh carts,
leaving the blaze orange sentrys battered and distressed.

Raucous champion of the burgeoning economy,
its passing marked only by the scattering of blackbirds,
and the effluvial black vapor trail.

Go Lemmings Go!!!

Todays Rant:

God damnit...
The same add is in the paper.

Perhaps I should explain.
For the past year and a half I have been working 45-55 hours per week in a warehouse. When I applied for the job the advertisement in the paper read "warehouse position, full time, benefits, competitive wages". When I was hired, however, I was informed that it was actually a part time position without benefits, sick leave, vacation, or paid overtime (this last bit translates to 5-15 hours a week worked for free).
So for 18 months I have (like many people in the current economy) been a full time (part time) employee. Two weeks ago I secured a second job (which actually is full time, and actually does have a benefits package available within 3 months of hire), and informed my erstwhile employer that I would need to cut my 45-55 hours a week back to about 30. Of course my boss went through the whole "after all we've done for you" routine, and informed me that he would have to hire a full time employee to cover the hours I was working (thus making me an economic redundancy...) No surprises here, I was pretty much expecting this response.
But this week in the paper I saw the same god damn add... "Warehouse position, full time, benefits, competitive wages", and I just know that the poor person who gets the job is going to end up getting shafted, just like I did, and just like my predecessor did.
So if anyone out there knows someone who is thinking of applying for a warehouse job, and the company deals mainly in electrical supply (wiring houses, not stereo's), make sure that they are careful. It is a warehouse job, but its only full time in practice, its only benefit is daily exercise, and the wages are competitive with many of the finer fast food franchises in the area.
